History

The company was founded in London in 1845 by William Welch Deloitte, the first person to be appointed an independent auditor of a public company. Deloitte opened an office in Basinghall Street. 35 years later, he opened another office in New York, where the company is still headquartered.

The company as it is today, Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu, is a result of a series of mergers. In 1952, Deloitte merged with Haskins & Sells. The joint company was named Deloitte, Haskins & Sells. Meanwhile, Tohmatsu Awoki & Co, a Japan-based firm founded by Nobuzo Tohmatsu in 1968, became part of Touche Ross in 1975. In 1989, Deloitte, Haskins & Sells and Touche Ross merged in the USA to form Deloitte & Touche and, in 1993, the international firm was renamed to Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu. In 1995, the partners created the Deloitte & Touche Consulting Group, now known as Deloitte Consulting.
