History

Booz & Company was founded by Edwin Booz in Chicago in 1914. Booz, a graduate of Northwestern University, had a theory that businesses would be more successful if they had impartial experts outside their companies to call on for advice. His theory grew into the management consulting profession.

In 1916, Booz and two partners founded the Business Research and Development Company, a start-up that performed market research and did investigational work for commercial and trade organisations. It was Booz who defined the management consulting profession and his company that coined a number of terms and concepts that are now crucial to the consulting practice, including product life cycle, supply chain, supply chain management, and the PERT Chart.

In 2008, Booz & Company separated its operations from its federal government consulting business in the U.S., which has kept the parent company's name, Booz Allen Hamilton. Booz Allen Hamilton is owned by The Carlyle Group, a private equity firm, while Booz & Company took its commercial consulting business and government consulting outside the U.S. and now operates as a partnership. The two companies collaborate on several joint opportunities and have a non-compete agreement that will lapse in 2011, allowing Booz & Company to return to the U.S. Government market.
